It happened… those two pink lines!! Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, you might be wondering if you should book a maternity session with a Marietta Maternity Photography. Are they really worth it? What will you wear? What will you do with the photos? As both a mom of four and Marietta photographer, I am here to tell you YES! Here are 5 Reasons to have a Maternity session.
I get a lot of newborn inquiries from people who tell me they “don’t need a maternity session,” or they’ll “do photos when the baby gets here.” I get it…you might not feel your best, you don’t feel like showing off your body after gaining pregnancy weight, you don’t see the reason for doing two sessions so close together, and maybe you think you won’t do anything with the maternity photos.
You don’t get many opportunities to do a maternity session, and many people regret not doing it. There are lots of reasons to skip it, but I’ll give you five reasons why you shouldn’t…
Seems straightforward, right? But, really, think about it. Maternity sessions are an incredibly beautiful way for you to connect with your partner. After all, it was your partnership that created this new life, and that is so, so special. It’s also an amazing time to capture the siblings loving on their future brother or sister. The excitement, love, and anticipation that you feel surrounding your new family member is palpable in a maternity session.
Your baby will be here before you know it! Things will get crazy. Maternity photos happen during the calm before the storm. The last days when it’s just you and your partner, or the last days of being a family of 3 (or more).
Some people say they don’t need maternity photos because they will take photos when the baby gets here. But that’s not what this is about. It’s not about just taking photos. Yes, you will do those family photos with your newborn soon, but you should also document your life and your family as it is right now. Those memories deserve to be remembered. Think about how a photo session before your baby gets here will look…and how the images will allow you to look back and remember the time before the baby, and memories of your life in this moment. That’s worth capturing.
I find that there is a little bit more of an ease to a photo session with families that I’ve worked with before. Everyone knows each other, I know what to expect from the family, and the family knows what to expect from me.
If there are kids involved, they are less anxious and more relaxed because they’ve already met me. So instead of being shy, and hiding behind mom and dad, they are excited to show me their new baby brother or sister…or their new toy. Either way, they have met me, so I’m not a stranger!
The maternity session is kind of like a trial run before the newborn session in a way. You will learn my way of shooting, and we will become familiar with each other. I really do think my sessions with families I’ve photographed before have a different feel to them…so a maternity session before a newborn session is always a good way to go.
Pregnancy can be tough, and every pregnant person has a different experience.
You’ve probably heard the phrases “You’re glowing!” or “Pregnancy suits you!” from various people throughout your pregnancy. Between the cankles, the urge to eat everything in sight, and the fact that none of your clothes fit anymore, pregnancy doesn’t always make you feel beautiful.
Your ever-expanding tummy may seem like the perfect excuse to avoid taking photos for a solid nine months, but it’s just the opposite!
You see, at the end of the day you come to realize the beautiful truth – you’re growing a human being – and that is enough of a reason to celebrate! Dressing up in a way that accentuates your bump, putting on some makeup, and pampering yourself (hello, pedicure!) for a photography session may be just what the doctor ordered for a case of the pregnancy blues.
When you see your pictures after the shoot, you may be surprised at just how beautiful you look. I have a closet full of dresses just for you to use for your maternity session! No stress over what to wear or having to go shopping. I have it all taken care of!
No matter how you feel physically, pregnancy is a time of looking hopefully and delightfully toward the future. In the months and years to come, as you focus on raising your new child, you may forget what it felt like to be eagerly awaiting their arrival. Maternity photos can serve as a reminder of those feelings in the years to come. After all, most women only experience pregnancy a few times in their lives, and chances are you won’t regret having a memento of that special time.
